A MOTHER is appealing for witnesses to trace a hit and run driver who knocked over her daughter as she made her way to school.

Sarah Hulme says 11-year-old Morgan was left shaken after she was hit near the lights in Chorley New Road, near to the junction of Winter Hey Lane, Horwich.

Police are investigating the incident which happened on Monday, March 16 between 8.20pm and 8.45 pm as Morgan was making her way to Rivington and Blackrod High School.

Mrs Hulme, who lives with her family in Heaton, said: "I have reported it to police, but there are no CCTV cameras in the area and we need witnesses to come forward. The accident happened outside of Funky Monkeys. There was no way the driver could not have realised she had hit my daughter.

"There was a child in the front of the car who is eight to ten years-old, she put her hand over her mouth.

"How can a mother do that? How would she feel if it was her child who had been hit and the driver left the scene?"

Morgan, a year seven pupil, managed to walk to school but a teacher phoned her mother later and she was taken to hospital for a check up.

Mrs Hulme, aged 32, said: "She has bruised her knees and is okay, but it could have been a lot worse.

"She had to take time off school because of the pain. It is important that the driver is found, more so for Morgan so she knows the driver has learned from it and the driver needs to realise that what she did, no one should do.

"I just want her to apologise, it seems as if she doesn't care."

Mrs Hulme says information she has received says it was a blue car which hit her daughter.

She added: "If there are any witnesses I would ask them to contact the police and pass on any information they have."

A police spokeswoman said that an investigation has opened into the incident and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

She said: "We are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact us."

Anyone with information is asked ring 101.
