LIGHTS, camera, action!

YouTube star Kelly Evans has gained 10,000 subscribers since February by uploading videos to the internet teaching people how to style hair and apply make-up.

The 29-year-old first started her channel The Vintage Selection in 2009 as a way to connect with people after suffering from depression and anxiety.

Until last month she only had 400 followers, but since investing in her hobby by investing in a new camera, lighting and editing software, her audience has grown rapidly.

The former Rivington and Blackrod High School pupil, who does not earn a wage from her channel but gets sent free samples, said: "It's hard to comprehend that so many thousands of people have subscribed in such a short space of time to watch my videos.

"When I started it I was struggling with depression and anxiety and thought it would be a good way to get myself interacting with people again.

"Like with all social media you receive good and bad comments. I used to get trolled quite badly at first which didn't help me with my depression.

"I don't get it as bad now. Plus the positive comments are what counts."

Ms Evans, of Longworth Road, Horwich, started experimenting with make-up when she was in school and went on to study a beauty course at college.

She said: "I have always enjoyed doing makeup — although I admit haven't always applied it very well. I got a little make-up kit with eye shadow when I was younger and it started from there.

"I hadn't done any filming before I started this. I just set up a small camera and filmed myself doing various tutorials such as how not to pluck your eyebrows too much or apply different types of make-up."

The beautician was even given advice from fellow fashion and beauty vlogger Zoe Sugg, known as Zoella. The 24-year-old shot to fame with her video channel and released a record-selling book, Girl Online, last year.

Ms Evans, who studied hair and media make-up at Bolton College, said: "I've been in contact with Zoella for quite a while. She gave me some good advice — only make the videos you want to make and not to do anything I don't feel comfortable doing.

"It's just for fun at the moment but if I was offered the chance to do it full time I would definitely do it."
