A "LUNATIC" driver was caught on video chasing an ambulance through traffic on a motorway.

Incredible footage shows the vehicle swerving in and out of the path of lorries to stay on the tail of the ambulance while it was responding to an emergency on the M60.

The driver and another man in the vehicle, both thought to be from Bolton, gloat that they are sailing through an hour's worth of traffic.

They also laugh and shout at other car drivers for being "inconsiderate" in being slow to get out of the ambulance's path.

The North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) condemned the driving, saying it have could seen those responsible end up in an ambulance themselves.

Police say they are keen to speak to anyone who may have information about the incident, described as "completely unacceptable".

A NWAS spokesman said: “By following the ambulance as closely as they did, the driver of the vehicle posed a risk to themselves, other road users and, indirectly, the patient this ambulance was responding to. The video shows the ambulance responding to an emergency incident and, therefore, braking to negotiate the heavy traffic.

"The serious aspect of this is, if they had collided with the rear of the ambulance, this would have delayed our emergency response to someone who needed us urgently and could have been a life-threatening situation.

"It may have been their family member or friend and they could have had a death on their conscience.

“Hopefully, they will think twice and drive more responsibly in future to avoid ending up in an ambulance themselves.”

During the 90-second video which was posted on Facebook, one of the men says: "When I'm going home tomorrow, I'm going to ring an ambulance.

At another stage, one says: "They're all moving, look at the good people."

A man who spotted the video on Facebook and asked to remain anonymous said: "I'm a former ambulance driver so this infuriated me. These people are taking advantage to get through the traffic. They are complete lunatics."

Hugh German, from the Bolton Institute of Advanced Motorists, said: "It is unbelievable that anyone would think this is ok.

"We are meeting this totally irresponsible driving and selfish driving every day. I can't understand they don't worry about their own safety.

"They think they are being clever but really it puts everybody else at risk."

Chief Inspector Rachel Buckle said: "Driving like this is completely unacceptable and we are keen to speak to anyone who may recognise the vehicle or know who the driver or occupants were , to call us on 101."
