YOUNGSTERS took a break from maths and english — to be given a masterclass in healthy eating by the Fun Food Chef.

Pupils at Devonshire Road Primary School in Heaton were reluctant to try some of the food on offer — but were eventually won over by the Greek delicacies.

Year five teacher Pusmeena Ward said: "The Fun Food Chef prepared a Greek menu for the children, encouraging them to try different Mediterranean foods.

"He told them that many people turn their nose up at food without even trying them and if you first don't like try it at least three times.

"At first children were saying Miss I don't like and after trying them they started to."

The food platter included olives, meat balls, tzatziki and other delicacies.

And children even enjoyed some Greek dancing.

Mrs Ward said: "The children loved it. They found out how easy the dishes were to prepare and we had parents evening that evening, and the mums and dads were talking about it to. They were really enthusiastic about it.

"Cooking and food is now a part of the curriculum and all week the children have been taking part in activities promoting healthy eating.

"Some of the children have been to the market others made Spanish food.

"It has been a fun week."
