Only this time, it all takes place in 3D.

David R Ellis’s second stab at the franchise (after Final Destination 2) is a fun if tiresome outing that’s content to play to formula. As ever, a circle of friends cheat death, this time at a race track, and spend the rest of their days attempting to outrun the Grim Reaper.

Death by suction and a flying stone are among the more inventive check-outs, but such prolonged sequences only go so far in masking the feeling that the franchise has seen better days. Tension has been replaced by predictability and acting takes a distant back seat to the gimmicks. The 3D heightens the gross factor but it’s maybe time to lay this franchise to rest.
