Arriving in Barlanark in Glasgow, the most deprived area of Scotland, you could be forgiven for thinking that somebody had got it wrong.

Modern three-bedroomed houses have sprung up in the shadow of the old tenements, children play football happily on the grass and you cannot help but be struck by the feeling that new life is being breathed into the area.

Despite the outward appearance of regeneration the old problems of gang fighting and anti-social behaviour remain. Two weeks ago, Frank McGlinchey, a truck driver who lives in the new housing, found a teenage boy beaten unconscious beside his house: ''Nobody knew who he was, we called an ambulance but we never heard what happened to him.''

Jacqueline Ferguson, a mother-of-two, said: ''There's nothing for weans to do in this area but hang about and fight. There used to be park attendants but they're not there anymore and even if the kids could get in, the place

is covered in glass and sometimes syringes.''
