THE last bastion of Scottish Sabbath observance will be breached in four days' time when ferry firm Caledonian MacBrayne launches a Sunday service between Stor-noway and Ullapool.

The news angered traditionalists and the islands council, and last night there was speculation a legal challenge may yet be mounted by Sabbath campaigners.

They had been bracing themselves for a one-off Sunday sailing to take people back from the Hebridean Celtic Music Festival which starts tonight on Lewis and Harris.

But news that a scheduled return Sunday service would be introduced took most by surprise.

CalMac said that their policy had changed because of a legal opinion that told them they could be breaking the Equality Act by not providing the service.
