THEY may only be at primary school but these youngsters are already published poets — and they DO know it.

Pupils from Bishop Bridgeman took part in the Out of This World contest earlier this year as part of the school’s poetry week.

Alisha Ali and Shana Gani, both aged 10, and Leonie Heyes, Alok Jadva, and Sulaiman Khan, all aged 11, were chosen from 18,000 applicants across the country.

Each of the winners received their own copy of the book.

Deputy headteacher Mrs Hafeji said: “Poetry week has been a big success overall and it has really helped the children learn how to write their own verse.

“We are really proud of the winners of the Out of This World competition and will definitely be getting involved again next year.”

The school was also visited by Rossendale based poet Ian Bland who spent two days at the school teaching youngsters.

Mr Bland spent time with the children working on poetry and performance and also recited some of his own poetry during assembly.

He said: “It was a brilliant few days.

“All the children were really receptive and a pleasure to work with.”

The Young Writers competition has been running since 1991 to give children the opportunity to have their work published and to generate interest in poetry.

Young Writers provides lesson plans for teachers who apply to the competition to develop poetry based on a theme.

The competition is open to key stage two students and prizes include £1,000 for the best school in the series, £500 for the next best two, and £250 for the next four.

Each child who wins a place in the book also wins a £10 book token.
