YOUNG people proved they were made of the write stuff when they swapped their classroom for the newsroom.

Budding reporters in the Little Lever, Kearsley and Stoneclough primary school cluster took part in a journalism project in a bid to write an award-winning article.

The competition was organised to encourage young wordsmiths and give children a purpose for their writing.

Excited youngsters could choose to write for a newspaper or a magazine on a sporting topic of their choice, with a winning article chosen from each school.

Nathan Openshaw scored an exclusive with Tony Kelly for his successful article.

The ex-Bolton Wanderers player dropped in at the after-school journalism club, where the 11-year-old managed to grab an interview with him.

Nathan who attends Mytham Primary School in Little Lever, said: "It was really exciting to interview him — he told us all the clubs he played for and said Bolton was the best because it was the friendliest club, and said it was a strong team."

The budding journalist added: "When I got to play outside I ran around the playground screaming after finding out I had won."

Luke Chamberlain, aged 10, from St Saviour CE Primary School, wrote a magazine article about different types of sports, which he researched at school and at home.

He also designed the page.

Luke, a keen writer, said: "When we were researching the Olympics I found out how fast Usain Bolt was to win his races, so it was interesting because I found out a lot of information I did not know.

"I thought the project was good, because I like designing and making things."

Each prizewinner was treated to a visit to The Bolton News offices and won tickets to watch Bolton Wanderers at the Macron Stadium.

The winners were: St Stephen’s (Kearsley Moor) CE School, Nathaniel Campion; St Saviour CE Primary School, Ringley, Luke Chamberlain; Spindle Point Primary School, Michael Moores; St Matthew’s CE Primary School, Little Lever, Alana Pennington; St Teresa’s RC Primary School, Little Lever, Thomas Blackburn; Mytham Primary School, Little Lever, Nathan Openshaw; Prestolee Primary School, Joshua Tebay; Ladywood School, Little Lever, Ahmad Ismail; Bowness Primary School, Little Lever, Nathan Adams.
