MORE than 80 people attended a special education question time in Bolton tonight to quiz politicians on the recent changes in education.

Free schools, testing of children at the age of four and the lack of local authority control were among the issues discussed.

The event was organised by Bolton trade unions.

Around 80 people attended the session held in the lecture theatre at Bolton Library to quiz a panel made up ofYasmin Qureshi, Labour candidate for Bolton South East, Cllr Kevin McKeon, Bolton Council’s executive member for children’s service , Laura Diggle, Green Party candidate for Bolton North East, Carol Swarbrick, Lib Dem councillor, Philippa Harvey, National President of the National Union of Teachers.

No member of the local Tory Party was available.

Tom Hanley from the Bolton Trades Union Council said: “The evening went really well, we have had more than 80 people here which is good given the short notice.

“Everybody wants the same thing, education to be children centred, less testing and having professionally qualified teachers in the classroom."
