CHESSMASTERS showed they had the right moves to impress one of the game's biggest fans.

Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate for Bolton South East Yasmin Qureshi dropped by Kearsley West Primary School to see its thriving chess club in action.

As an MP, Ms Qureshi set up the All Parliamentary Group of Chess to try and get the historical board game on the timetable.

She said: "It is a great game which develops many important skills, like concentration, thinking strategically and decision making.

"It is also a very enjoyable game."

In Bolton chess is not the preserve of the private schools, with many local schools introducing the game to their pupils.

Ms Qureshi said: "I am absolutely delighted that so many schools in Bolton have chess clubs, and it something I want to happen in all schools.

"It's great what is happening in Bolton, the game is not just for those in private schools, every child should be playing it."
