CUSTOMERS won’t be ‘fin’ on the ground for a fishmonger’s stall which has been attracting shoppers with an unusual catch of the day.

An open-mouthed 120kg porbeagle shark greeted bargain hunters at MPJ Fish Supplies in Bolton Market – with many stopping to take selfies with the sea beast.

The shark was caught by a boat which was deep sea fishing for blue whiting south of the Faroe Islands on Monday.

It was sold to Oban Fish Selling Company, with the Fleetwood merchants delivering it to Bolton today.

Mick Evans, the owner of MPJ Fish Supplies, said the shark would make hundreds of fillets, some of which will be sold on to nearby restaurants.

He said: “It is very eye-catching and has been drawing a lot of people to the stall. Everyone has been down taking selfies with it.

“I think it will all be sold by Saturday night."

Mr Evans, who has been a fishmonger for 37 years, has been running his current Bolton Market stall for four years.

Before that, the 50-year-old ran two other stalls at Bolton Market and has also worked at Bury Market.

In the past Mr Evans, who lives in Deane, has decorated his stall with huge tuna and halibut to catch customers’ eyes.

He added: “We sell quite a lot of shark – it is very good fish and is a healthy meat.

“It is pink, tastes like a fishy pork and has a very lean texture, similar to a pork steak.

“It is ideal for grilling and pan-frying, is nice barbecued and makes good curries as well because it is a solid fish and does not flake up.”
