A MUM who gave birth to her baby prematurely on holiday in Spain has been taken back to hospital after doctors failed to detach her son’s umbilical cord.

Karla Hornby gave birth to little Freddie Jackson three months early in Benidorm and had to undergo an emergency caesarean section two weeks ago.

She has now been forced to go back to the hospital after her wound became infected because of the baby’s umbilical cord being left attached to her.

Ms Hornby aged 28, who is abroad with her partner Jordan Jackson, Freddie’s father, said: “My sister came over from Bolton and was changing the dressing on where I had my C-section when she noticed a discharge.

“My temperature was high and I felt really ill.

“When they were draining my wound, they suddenly started pulling something out of me and it just kept coming — I was asking what on earth it was.

She added: “I couldn’t believe that they had left the umbilical cord inside me for two weeks — it was very scary.”

Ms Hornby and Mr Jackson, aged 21, have been told they could have to stay in Benidorm for three months before Freddie, who still weighs just short of two and a half pounds, can come home.

She said: “Freddie is doing okay, he has been sick a few times and hasn’t gained as much weight as we’d like but he is doing okay.”

Mr Jackson is a serviceman with the Royal Logistics Corps and was due to report back for duty earlier this week before the unexpected arrival.

Ms Hornby said: “Jordan has been absolutely amazing, I don’t think I could have survived without him — he has done everything for me and always keeps my spirits up when things are really tough.”

The couple have been inundated with parcels and packages from family and friends at home and have also received gifts from people they have never met.

Ms Hornby said: “It is completely overwhelming the support we have received, my Facebook inbox is totally overflowing with messages."

Fundraising for the couple has now topped £5,000. To donate to the family’s fundraising page, visit gofundme.com/st3kxfk
