PEOPLE of different faiths from across Bolton will come together to help raise money for people struck by the earthquakes in Nepal which have killed more than 8,500.

The event is being organised by Bolton Interfaith Council to take place in Victoria Square from 11am until 2.30pm on Saturday.

Entertainment will include the Swaminarayan Pipe Band, Bollywood dancing, activities and stalls.

On April 25, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake erupted approximately 85 miles east of the capital, Kathmandu, killing more than 8,000 people and destroying 500,000 homes nationwide.

Three weeks later the country was struck again by a 7.3 magnitude tremor, near Mount Everest, that killed more than 100 people and triggered fresh landslides, making the combined disaster the deadliest in the country’s history.

Chan Parmar, from Bolton Interfaith Council, said: "We have teamed up with British Red Cross to hold this event on Saturday.

"We will have the Swaminarayan Pipe Band playing around the town centre, we have the use of a marquee and there will be Bolton FM, Bolton Halwa Centre and many volunteers providing activities for everyone to come and enjoy on the day and contribute towards a very worthy cause.

"The people of Nepal, already a poor community, have really suffered in this horrific tragedy which continues to add to their misery without the basic needs of shelter, food, water sanitation, medication and so much more.

"Please do come along and help us support them.

"Our event has been wonderfully supported by so many partner organisations and volunteers who are providing their services at no cost at all.

"That says a lot for the people of our town."

Money collected on the day will be handed over to the Red Cross to form part of the charity's continuing relief efforts.

Anyone who would like to provide an activity on the day or volunteer can contact Mr Parmar on 01204 546110.
