RESIDENTS in a block of flats were evacuated after a bin compound went up in flames.

Firefighters from Bolton North were called to Claremont Court in Topping Street, Halliwell, at about 10.40pm on Thursday to a number of big bins alight behind the property.

Fire crews evacuated the flats and one resident was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by North West Ambulance Service, but she did not suffer any serious injuries.

The bins, which were accessible at the rear of the property, were destroyed, and parts of the side of the building suffered heat and smoke damage, including window frames and plaster on the side of the building.

It is believed the fire was started by accident by someone who was in the area.

Watch manager Nigel Booth said: “People in these types of property need proper fire doors to protect them in the event of a fire. Make sure a call has been made to 999 and do not attempt to go back in the building or you could end up a casualty.”
