LEADING British athlete Jess Taylor put youngsters at a Halliwell primary school through their paces — and inspired them to follow their dreams.

Jess, who won a bronze medal in the heptathlon at last year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, visited St Matthew's CE Primary School to lead a series of fitness circuit exercises throughout the morning, and followed this with a motivational talk.

The 26-year-old spoke to the pupils about what she had achieved and brought her medals in to show.

Year five teacher and the school's PE co-ordinator Andy Currid said: "The visit by Jess went really well. The children loved it, and they are still talking about and giving a lot of positive feedback.

"She did different exercises with the children, such as star jumps and mountain climbers — some of the staff took part too. I took part with every class, and I was very tired by the end of the day!"

He continued: "After the sessions with each class, she led a motivational and inspirational assembly where she showed her Commonwealth medal,

"Jess told the children if they work hard and follow their dreams, anything is possible.

"She said she never gave up and joined a club and trained and went on to represent her country which she loved."

Mr Currid added: "The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and we hope that they have been inspired to become the athletes of the future."

Children said they enjoyed the session and it motivated them to reach their goals.

Rayhan Ismail, aged six, said:“It was really good having the athlete in school. She taught us lots of new exercises to help us to keep fit.”

Jessica Welsh, aged 10, added: “I felt inspired to hear that she never gave up, persevered and tried her best to become the person she is today.”

The women's heptathlon usually consists of: 100 metres hurdles; high jump; shot put; 200 metres; long jump; javelin; and 800 metres.
