RADIO station Bolton FM has hit the lottery jackpot — winning a £10,000 grant to fund a project teaching youngsters about broadcasting.

Bolton’s only community radio station said it will roll out media training to young people in schools in Bolton following on from a pilot scheme which took place last year.

The school programme aims to improve self confidence, social skills and employability, leading to improvements in aspirations for young people.

The Big Lottery Fund's Awards For All initiative awarded a total number of 147 grants this year in the North West totalling £1.3 million.

Bolton FM station manager Kevan Williams said he was delighted with the award.

He said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to take our work to every corner of the community through a structured schools training initiative. The true ethos of our community radio station can now be realised to its full potential.”

The Big Lottery Fund supports the aspirations of people who want to make life better for their communities across the UK.

We are responsible for giving out 40 per cent of the money raised by the National Lottery and invest over £650 million a year in projects big and small in health, education, environment and charitable purposes.

Since June 2004 we have awarded over £6.5billion to projects that make a difference to people and communities in need, from early years intervention to commemorative travel funding for World War Two veterans.

Since the National Lottery began in 1994, £33 billion has been raised and more than 450,000 grants awarded.
