CAR Share star Peter Kay has revealed he "spent a fortune" trying to pass his driving test - which  took him six years after failing it four times.

The Farnworth comic, who plays John Redmond on the BBC1 show alongside Kayleigh Kitson (Sian Gibson) as two supermarket workers sharing a lift to work, says he had 176 driving lessons between 1990 and 1996.

The show was filmed almost entirely inside the car, which Peter's character drives, and was a huge hit pulling in almost six million viewers for its first episode.

Peter, aged 41, tells all to Alan Carr on tonight's Chatty Man.

He said: “I’ve no sense of space. I am always bashing my car or hitting things if you go into bays or things.

"I just don’t think I was ready when I was younger. It cost a fortune. I did it that long they brought out the theory test. That was hard.

“People were like 'Why don’t you just give up?' People ran out of references when I kept failing my test.

"My mum can’t watch Car Share. She says, 'I can't enjoy it as you are not watching the road,' but I have told her that I can't act and drive.

"I don’t want to shine light on the magic for her.”

Peter will be joined on the show, which starts at 10pm on Channel 4, by US actress Ellie Kemper and singer Adam Lambert.
