AN eight-month-old baby escaped without injuries after being trapped inside a car on the hottest day of the year so far.

Firefighters were called to a house, off Manchester Road in Clifton, at 11.55am today by a distressed mother.

The woman had strapped her baby into the car outside her home, put her car keys on the driver’s seat and walked round to get into the car – to find the doors had locked.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at 12.01pm as temperatures soared to 29C, and immediately broke the window of the car to rescue the baby boy.

He was unharmed by the ordeal – with his mother saying she had not wanted to shower the baby with broken glass by smashing the window.

Firefighters were on the scene for about 20 minutes.

The mother later said on Facebook: "This was my child and I was outside my own house about to set off out.

"I strapped him in the car put my keys on the driver’s seat and walked around to get in and the doors had locked.

"We rang the fire brigade so they could get in safely rather than me risking showering my baby with glass from the window.

"They arrived within about five minutes."

Watch Manager John Duffin said: “The baby had been locked in the car about five minutes when we arrived.

“It looks like the mum had been unpacking some shopping when the door accidentally closed – she was very upset.

“Because it was the hottest day of the year it became really urgent for us to get the baby out.

“The car had got really hot so we smashed the windows to get the keys, which were in the engine, and open the door.”

* Early reports suggested the incident had occured close to the Unity Brook Inn in Kearsley but this was not the case.
