Bolton was hit with rain, hailstones, thunder and lightning as the hot and humid weather turned unsettled.

Many people grabbed their phones and cameras to snap the storm which arrived at the end of one of the hottest days in recent years.

Hailstones the size of golf balls rained down, the one pictured below taken by Chris Byrne. He said: "Is this the biggest hail ever seen in Bolton? A selection landing in the garden tonight, hail like golf balls."

The Bolton News:

The Met Office has a yellow warning for rain in place until just before midnight on Wednesday.

It said: "Some torrential downpours are possible leading to localised surface water flooding, with large hail, squally winds and frequent lightning also possible hazards.

"The public should be aware that there is a chance of some very localised significant disruption."

There is no warning currently in place for Thursday.
