FIREFIGHTERS were called to sheltered housing in Brownlow Fold after a pan of food left on the cooker set ablaze.

A 55-year-old man was helped out of the heavily smoke-logged flat in St Matthew’s Grange, Stowell Street, by the building’s site warden after the fire broke out at about 11.45am today.

Firefighters then tackled the blaze, which caused smoke damage to the flat.

The Bolton News understands firefighters have been called out to multiple fires at this property – including at least one other incident in the last week.

John Stewart, watch manager at Bolton Central fire station, said: “Our fire safety message is that there is a clear danger in leaving food unattended on the cooker.

“It is also important there are working smoke alarms – in this instance the smoke alarm did activate, which was good and prevented the incident from becoming more serious.”

Chris Langan, director of customer services at Contour Homes, which manages St Matthew's Grange, said: “Our customers’ health and safety is crucial, and thankfully nobody has been hurt.

“There have been two fires at this flat this week and we are working with the fire service, social services and support providers to ensure the safety of the resident who lives there and all neighbours at St Matthew’s Grange.

“We are also continuing to work with the fire service to provide guidance to residents so that they can stay safe in their homes.”
