POLICE have launched a fresh appeal for witnesses after a teenager was left with serious injuries after being hit by a car.

The 18-year-old suffered a fractured pelvis following the incident, which occurred at about 3.10am on Thursday morning.

A private hire taxi had been parked outside The Bar in Nelson Square and, as the driver set off, he collided with the teenager.

She was taken to Salford Royal hospital with a fractured pelvis and serious leg injuries, and remains in a stable condition.

Shortly after the crash, the Vauxhall Zafira taxi was attacked by several members of the public and the 33-year-old driver was assaulted and suffered facial injuries.

Constable Paul Terry from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “There were a lot of people in the vicinity of Nelson Square at the time of this collision and also the subsequent attack on the taxi driver.

“I have no doubt that both incidents attracted a lot of attention from people who were in the area and we are asking for anyone that saw or heard anything to come forward and speak to us. Your information could be vital to our investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to call officers at the Serious Collision Investigation Unit directly on 0161 856 4742.
