THERE was no strawberries and cream in sight, and it might not be Murray Mound, but that didn’t stop tennis fans from watching Wimbledon in an unusual location.

Market Place bosses are hoping their £150,000 24 square metre screen, installed in the shopping centre two weeks ago, will prove to be a smash hit this summer.

The giant screen, which is made up of 36 individual screens, will be used to show sporting events from Wimbledon to The Ashes and The Open.

Staff are also working to get Sky coverage so they can televise Premier League football matches when the new season begins.

One person who enjoyed watching Nick Kyrgios take on Milos Raonic was pensioner Beryl Wood, from The Hough.

Mrs Wood said: “I think it is a good idea – especially for tennis fans – although there needs to be more seating so people can watch it. It is a nice place to come and spend some time.”

The 76-year-old hopes Andy Murray may go all the way, and said she was sorry to see Rafael Nadal crashing out in the first week.

She added: “I am rooting for Andy Murray but deep down I think the final it will be Roger Federer against Novak Djokovic. Those two are more hungry for it.”

When the screen is not televising sporting events it will be used to promote the Market Place’s shops, events taking place at the centre and the ongoing vaults renovation.

Malcolm Berry, operations manager at the Market Place, said: “The centre is delighted to have this fabulous asset. It is something we are looking forward to using.”
