PEOPLE with dementia will have the chance to look at photographs and footage of famous Bolton Wanderers games from the past as part of a new Whites initiative.

Bolton Wanderers Community Trust is supporting our Donate £1 for Dementia campaign – and bosses say the club is already working to improve understanding of the condition.

Pictured in a sea of empty seats with our giant £1 coin appeal logo, Lofty the Lion illustrated how people who have dementia can feel isolated and lonely.

The Donate £1 for Dementia campaign aims to raise £200,000 to make wards at the Royal Bolton Hospital more dementia-friendly.

Phil Mason, head of Bolton Wanderers Community Trust and club chaplain, said: “We want to get behind the Donate £1 for Dementia campaign because local support is very important.

“We are delighted to be on board with it, and we think it is a great campaign.

“I hope all local people get behind it because it is an issue which affects so many people, so to have wards which are dementia-friendly are key.”

Mr Mason said the club made a pledge to support dementia awareness at the Bolton Vision conference last year, and are helping Horwich become a dementia-friendly town.

In May, 28 members of Bolton Wanderers staff attended a free Dementia Friends awareness training session held at the Macron Stadium.

The trust is now developing a new nostalgia programme for people who have dementia, and are seeking support and sponsorship.

Mr Mason added: “The programme will see people with dementia invited to the Macron to look at old photographs and films and talk about old games.

“People with dementia might remember some of the key games of their life and the history of the club, so it is a way of supporting people who have the condition.

“It is about how we can play our part.”
