YOUNGSTERS have wasted no time naming the next generation of bin wagons.

Recyceriffic and the Greedy Green Machine are among the newly named trucks which will be collecting residents' recycled rubbish.

The vehicles were christened by eight-year-old Ciara Morley and 10-year-old Ferwah Asgher who were two of 11 winners of a competition to name Bolton Council's new fleet.

This week the trucks pulled into the pupils' schools complete with signs bearing the new names.

Children were invited to name 11 new trucks which will be used for collecting recycling waste from households to get them interested in green issues and encourage them to get involved in recycling at home.

They had to come up with a name reflecting the recycling theme.

More than 500 entries were received and the final 11 names were selected by environment chief Cllr Nick Peel and Mayor of Bolton Cllr Carol Swarbrick.

The newly named trucks are this week heading to the schools of each individual winner.

Ciara who attends SS Osmund and Andrew's RC Primary School, Breightmet, said: "I was very surprised to be told I had won. Each time I see one of the vehicles I will be hoping its mine.

"I’ll probably wave to the driver."

Ferwah showed her friends around Recyceriffic when it pulled into Beaumont Primary School in Ladybridge.

Cllr Peel said: “We are delighted that we have had such a high number of excellent entries to our competition and it was extremely tricky to pick the winning eleven entries.

"However, all of the winners used the theme of recycling to come up with interesting and fun names for our vehicles.

"We hope that they enjoy meeting their named vehicle. I hope that the competition has also been a fun way of getting younger children involved with recycling and making Bolton a more environmentally friendly place in the future.”
