FIFTEEN hundred Bolton homes remain without water this morning following yesterday's technical fault at the Sweetloves Water Treatment Works.

The households still affected are mainly in the BL1 area and the supply there is expected to return by lunchtime today.

While the technical fault has now been resolved, some residents in high ground in the borough may be waiting longer into the afternoon for their supply to fully return.

The advice remains for all those who have been affected is to boil the water before using it for drinking or food preparation.

United Utilities has now said it will automatically pay compensation to customers affected by the shortage.

The firm's policy is to refund customers who have gone without water for 12 hours a sum of £25 plus an extra £10 for every further 12 waterless hours.

United Utilities will automatically work out who is owed cash and refund accounts directly.

The firm has also said anyone who has been forced to buy bottled water will be refunded.

The water supply was cut-off to eighteen thousand homes after the plant developed a fault with how it disenfects water at about midnight on Monday.

Residents across the BL1, 2, 6 and 7 post codes were all affected, but the majority of these have now had their supply returned after the fault was fixed.

For people who are still in need of bottled water, United Utilities has arranged for bottles to be made available at the following locations:

  • St Thomas of Canterbury RC School, Eastbourne Grove, Bolton BL1 5LH.

  • Asda Stores Ltd. Moss Bank Way, Bolton

  • Also at the intersection of Kingsbury Avenue/Rydale Road
