The hospice, based in Chorley New Road, regained its water flow following yesterday's cut-off, but staff were struggling to carry out the advised boiling of water to provide for patients at the centre.

The hospice twitter account carried a plea for help and asked if any residents were able to drop off some bottled water.

A large number did just that and were followed by United Utilities staff who donated enough water to get the hospice through the day and night.

Alice Atkinson, fundraising manager, said: "We would like to thank both the members of the public and United Utilities for these generous donations, which were really important for us to be able to look after our patients with things like cold drinks and cooking."

"The community really rallied around and once again showed us how much the hospice means to them.

"I would also like to thank Bolton Council who were straight on the phone offering help - we are very grateful to everyone and are now looking forward to getting back to normal."
