TWO teenagers armed with baseball bats have attacked a post office in Little Lever.

Precinct News in Market Street, which houses a newsagent and post office, was attacked at about 3.35pm today.

Two men in their mid to late teens entered the post office shouting and behaving in a threatening manner, before one smashed a food freezer with a baseball bat.

They did not take anything from the shop or injure anyone and police believe they were looking for a certain person, who was not there.

The teenagers then fled the scene in a black or dark grey Peugeot.

They have been described as in their mid to late teens and of medium build.

One was wearing a blue hoody with the hood up and black shorts with grey trim and was carrying a silver and blue baseball bat.

The second teenager was wearing a black hoody with the hood up, grey tracksuit bottoms and black trainers with white soles and was carrying a red and silver baseball bat.

Initial reports suggested the attack had been an armed robbery – but police said it did not seem that the teenagers intended to commit and armed robbery.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “We were called to Market Street at 3.35pm.

“Two men who were believed to have been looking for someone went into a post office armed with baseball bats and behaved in a threatening manner.

“One of them then used a bat to smash the top of a freezer before they fled the scene.

“No arrests have yet been made.”

UKIP councillor Sean Hornby, who represents Little Lever and Darcy Lever, said he believed several other businesses in Market Street had been targeted in recent months.

He added: “Police tell me they are confident they are going to catch them. They are still dealing with the incident and conducting enquiries.

“Obviously it is very worrying in this close knit community when something like this happens.”
