FORMER Whites star Kevin Davies has called on the government to tackle the UK's 'homeless crisis' — as he opened a new 'one stop shop' for homeless people in Bolton.

The ex Bolton Wanderers captain cut the ribbon of the Hope 4 Homeless shop yesterday.

The popular striker also works helping the Bolton community with his own charity KiDs of Bolton.

The store — set up by founders Louise Adamson, Aisha Connor, Jamilah Rashid and Billa Ahmed — will serve as a 'one-stop-shop' for homeless people to get clothes, shoes, a hot drink and use the internet.

Kevin said: "It's great what they have done with the shop and there are some fantastic items that people have donated already.

"You would think that the government could do more to take care of the homeless crisis in this country.

"I'm not sure about the statistics in Bolton but you do see quite a few of people sleeping rough when you walk through the town, so it's great to see groups like this making a difference.

"There's nothing better than seeing your local community pulling together and supporting people by giving up their time for others."

The Tonge Moor Road shop — which has been offered to the organisation at a reduced rate by the landlord — joins a number of other initiatives which have been organised by the local charitable organisation, including free meals, free haircuts and free dental care.

Mr Ahmed said: "It is a misconception that homeless people want to be homeless, or that they are alcoholics and drug users. Many of them are homeless because of circumstances in their lives and this shop offers them a place to go to feel welcome and be treated like a normal member of society."

To donate, visit the shop at 131 Tonge Moor Road.
