AN amateur filmmaker from Bolton will premiere his first film featuring music legends such as Liam Gallagher and Peter Hook, telling the story of how the iconic Hacienda nightclub affected their lives.

Chris Hughes was one of dozens of music fans to buy a piece of the legendary club in 2000, when parts of it were auctioned off to raise money for youth charities before it was demolished to make way for apartments.

He bought a plank from the dancefloor for £5, and decided to make a documentary to track down people who also took home a piece of history, with items for sale including bricks, the DJ booth and even the urinals.

The project has taken Mr Hughes, originally from Egerton, about five-and-a-half years, and it will be premiered in Manchester at the Royal Northern College of Music on Saturday, August 15.

He originally enlisted the help of a neighbour, who agreed to film the interviews for the documentary, and eventually he brought together a team of about 15 people who helped to bring the story to screen.

The team all donated their time for free, as profits from the project will go towards cancer charities Cancer Research and Kidneys for Life.

Mr Hughes, who works in IT, said: "I have never made a film before, and I have always wanted to because I love documentaries.

"I went to the club a few times, I wasn't a regular, but I know how much it meant to people.

"We had people from all over the world getting in touch with their stories, as far away as America and Australia.

"It just started to snowball, and people were happy to give up their time because it is for charity, and I thought it was the right thing to do since Tony Wilson benefited from cancer charities."

Former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher features in the documentary, as well as New Order bassist Peter Hook who conducted the auction in 2000, but Mr Hughes says the singer shouldn't have strictly been featured in the show.

The 44-year-old, who lives in Prestwich, said: "We tried to limit it to anybody who had actually bought something at the auction. Liam Gallagher hadn't bought anything, but when he became involved, we couldn't really say no to him could we?!"

A few celebrity appearances are expected for the launch night, which will also feature live music and DJ sets.

Tickets cost £16.50 and are available at rncm.ac.uk/production/do-you-own-the-dancefloor
