PUPILS with designs on success went out and got a 'pizza' the action.

Year eight pupils from Rivington and Blackrod High School have been involved in designing pizza packaging as part of a competition by Westhoughton based Stateside Foods.

The design and technology pupils had to focus on creativity, function and reuse in their design of innovative packaging for the year 3,000.

Young people found themselves exploring sustainable design concepts — as the environment has become a major focus for the industry.

Teacher Sarah Dunlop said: "The Stateside Food competition provided our students with an invaluable opportunity to simulate commercial practice by solving a ‘real world’ design need and then presenting ideas and prototypes to the company’s design team.

"Students used a range of communication skills including illustration, computer design and photography to present their ideas.

"The three winning entries received generous prizes in the form of two Kindle Fires and an art kit."

The winners were William Ewens, who won first place, Bethany Peace, in second place and Callum Goldthorp, who gained third place.

Natalie Goodall, from Stateside, said: "It has been a delight to work with Rivington and Blackrod High School on this design project.

"As an employer of just under 800 staff, Stateside Foods is pleased to engage with local young people to provide an insight into working life and we have been hugely impressed by the standard of entries that we received in response to our brief.

"We are thrilled that the students have had the opportunity to learn about our product development processes and we hope to support similar projects in the future."
