REGULARS at a Bolton pub rallied round as their pal 'braved the shave' — ahead of cancer treatment this week.

Dave Hartigan had his locks shorn at a Brave the Shave fundraising event at the Spread Eagle Pub in Hough Lane, Eagley, raising more than £3,500 for Macmillan and Cancer Research.

The 63-year-old from Bromley Cross has this week begun chemotherapy at the Christie.

Mr Hartigan was joined by friends and supportive family members including youngsters Lucy Bates, aged seven, Lilian Hindley, aged eight, and Mia Rose, aged 11, who all rallied round to help drum up donations.

Mr Hartigan said: "My hair is going to be falling out shortly anyway so I decided to try and make a few bob for a good cause.

"I've been growing my hair for about 10 years so there was quite a lot of it.

"It has been hard but I have a positive mental attitude and I am determined to get through this.

"It was a huge success. We have raised lots of money for some fantastic causes."

The day, organised with the help of the pub's licensees Janet Higgot and Aidan Roberts, also helped towards the plight of six-year-old Lily Reynolds from Prestwich who is receiving proton beam treatment in America after doctors discovered a lump on her chest.

Ms Higgot said: "It was a very positive but very emotive and emotional day for all of us. Despite it being a difficult time hearing about Dave's ill health, the community really pulled together and helped us raise more than £3,500, which we are really pleased about."
