ANTI-austerity protesters took to the streets in Bolton town centre to voice their anger at government cuts.

The rally, attended by between 200 and 300 people in Victoria Square, brought together groups including Bolton Against Bedroom Tax, Bolton Against Fracking and Wake Up Bolton under the umbrella banner of the Bolton People's Assembly.

Activists listened to a number of speakers before marching through the town, then held a mass picnic in the square.

Linda Charnock, of the Bolton People’s Assembly, said: “We are all about bringing different groups together to protest against the government’s austerity measures. I feel like we have got a lot of people together who have important messages to deliver.

“What has really struck me is the number of people coming up to us with their stories of how horribly things like the bedroom tax have impacted on their lives.

“Hundreds of people are out here with us today and it shows the strength of the opposition to what is happening in this country.”
