YOUNG people in Bolton excelled themselves in this year’s A-level results —with a number of sixth-forms posting their “best ever results”.

Bolton School celebrated a perfect 100 per cent pass rate, with Turton School in Bromley Cross and Kearsley Academy having a 99 per cent pass rate compared to the national average of 98.1 per cent.

Bolton’s overall pass rate stood at 97.9 per cent, on par with last year, while nationally the pass rate rose. And in line with the national picture the numbers of teenagers achieving the top grades of A*t o B fell slightly by 1.5 per cent to 42.2 per cent.

At Turton School, 49 per cent of students achieved the top A* to B grades, with 80 per cent going to university.

Sam Gorse, headteacher, said: “Another year of excellent results for our A-level students, with record numbers going to university this time.

“As well as our high flyers, results are impressive across the cohort; with many students out-performing their personal targets.

The majority of students at Kearsley Academy are going to university this autumn after the sixth form posted its “best ever results”.

Head of sixth form Richard Bottomley said: “We are thrilled and very proud of all our students’ performance.

“ We have our best ever results, with a 99 per cent success rate at A-level and equivalent.

“The hard work of all our students and staff has meant that we have improved the average point scores in both vocational and academic qualifications.

“We also have more grades at A*-B and equivalent than ever before and look forward to building on these results again next year.”

Canon Slade School’s pass rate stood at 98 per cent with 80 per cent of grades being at A* to C.

Headteacher Alan Mottershead said: “These bear witness to the sustained good work across their subjects, which the students have produced this year and are testimony also to the fine teaching and support which they have received.

“Results for our year 12 cohort are similarly very encouraging and promise much indeed again for next year.”

A record number of students achieved A* grades at Bolton Sixth Form College, with an overall pass rate of 98.5 per cent, with a perfect 100 per cent on vocational subjects.

Principal Steve Wetton said: “Bolton Sixth Form College has produced another set of outstanding results and is proud to be ranked as one of the top performing providers in the North West and in the top 10 per cent of the whole country.”

At Thornleigh Salesian College 69 per cent of students gained the highest grades, with the school posting a 98 per cent pass rate.

Headteacher Alison Burrowes said: “This year’s results continue to build on the year on year improvements in all areas here at Thornleigh Salesian College as we continue our relentless pursuit of excellence in all that we do.”

More than 50 per cents of grades were at A* to B at Rivington and Blackrod High School in Horwich, where the pass rate was 98 per cent.

Paul Canning, head of sixth form, said: “We are delighted with this year’s results which fully give credit to the hard work and dedication of all students.

“The large majority of students have been accepted to study the courses which they applied for and several students have been successful in their application to Russell Group Universities.”

Bolton St Catherine’s Academy posted a 95 per cent pass rate.

Principal Lee Harris said: "We are very proud of all our Sixth Form results this year, which include 95 per cent pass rate at A- level, and the opportunities they give to our students.”
