A FUNDRAISING page has been set up to raise money for an elderly couple who had to cancel their summer holiday after their home was burgled.

Thieves stole a travel bag containing passports, tickets and spending money from Fred and Enid Simmons house, leaving them unable to travel to meet friends in Turkey.

Now their granddaughter, Lisa Hornby, has set up a page appealing for donations, with a target of £1,000.

The couple are currently liaising with their insurers, but the couple's daughter, Elaine Fairhurst, says her dad would not be fit enough to fly anyway, because he had a triple heart bypass three years ago and is very upset by the situation.

They are also unable to rearrange the holiday because of the lack of passports.

On the fundraising page, Lisa said that her grandparents were "absolutely devastated" by what has happened.

She said: "My grandparents were robbed on Monday night in Westhoughton.

"The horrible scumbags took a bag containing tickets, passports, money and medication that was packed ready for them to go on holiday the following day.

"My grandparents worked hard all their life to save and retire happily but some disgusting person has ruined it.

"Not only did they lose their holiday, money, tickets and passports, but they've now lost their confidence and faith in the human race.

"They are absolutely devastated and struggling to come to terms with what has happened.

"I am trying to raise some money to help them replace what has been taken. Anything that you can give will be hugely appreciated."

The items were taken from the home on Monday evening, while 76-year-old Mr Simmons slept in his armchair.

The front door was unlocked at the time of the incident.

The bag contained a substantial amount of British money and Turkish currency, as well as new pair of glasses which 77-year-old Mrs Simmons had just purchased.
