RUNNING out of ideas for the school holidays?

Here is a list of fun activities for families to do before summer comes to an end.

1. Queens Park, Bolton

Named in honour of Queen Victoria, Queens Park is filled with beautiful scenery and panoramic views.

Take a picnic and enjoy a relaxing day in the sun – if it’s not raining that is. There are plenty of activities for youngsters to do such as enjoy the play park, sand pit and mazes.

Don’t forget to take a camera and get some family photos.

2. Fantastic Friday

Visit Smithills Hall on September 4 for a Fantastic Friday session to learn about heraldry and make your own shield. It will take place from 12.30pm until 2pm.

Admission – £1 entry for all (under fives free), no need to book.

3. Moses Gate Country Park, Farnworth

With the biggest play area in Bolton, Moses Gate Country Park has equipment suitable for all ages.

There are a variety of natural displays, lakes, open spaces and a great mix of habitats full of wildlife, so don’t forget to take some Instagram-worthy pictures.

4. Bolton Museum, Aquarium and Archive, Le Mans Crescent

There are plenty of activities to keep children entertained, fish feeds and the museum with its amazing Egyptian artefacts – including a 3,200-year-old mummy and ancient jewels. Entry is free.

5. AMF Hollywood Bowl, Middlebrook Leisure Park

Is it raining? There’s nothing worse than sitting at home in the holidays with horrid weather. But don’t worry, bowling is your saviour.

It is indoors and everyone’s cup of tea – even if you’re not the greatest player. How about having a family tournament at your local classic 10 pin bowling alley?

It costs £5.50 for adults and £4.50 for kids. There is also a family deal for £18, open daily from 10am till late.

6. Smithills Open Farm, Smithills Dean Road

Smithills Farm, home to more than 25 species, is the place to be.

The animals are friendly and generally keen for contact. There are plenty of familiar domestic breeds but they also have llamas and pythons for that extra excitement for little ones.

The farm is constantly evolving as new animals arrive every week so you never know what you’ll be surprised with.

It is open Monday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, and costs £7 for adult entry, £6 for two to 16-year-olds and under twos go free.

7. And last but not least, don't forget the town is hosting one of the biggest events of the year this weekend - Bolton Food and Drink Festival.

The town centre will be awash with food fans, celebrity chefs, mouthwatering grub, street entertainment and fabulous Bolton bands. Visit boltonfoodanddrinkfestival.com for details.
