A NEWLYWED couple enjoyed a hassle-free wedding day — after the bride’s sister convinced contractors to remove roadworks from outside their house.

Hannah Howarth and Richard Isherwood were married at Deane Church on Saturday, before a party at the family home in Salford Road.

But panic hit last week when Hannah’s sister Victoria realised the cable works being carried out in the street would prove a nightmare for their 70 guests.

After realising the problem, she quickly rang up Bolton Council, Electricity North West, and contractors Excalon and persuaded them to pack up and restore the road to its usual state over the weekend.

Victoria, aged 22, said: “I noticed the roadworks in front of the house last week and it dawned on me that they were going to be there on the day of the wedding.

“I knew we couldn’t be having that because of the number of people that were going to be coming round, so I rang up the council, then Electricity North West and the contractors.

“I told them that we needed them removed and they were really accommodating. They said that if they weren’t finished by the Friday then they would take them up and tarmac over the road, and that’s exactly what they did.

“Hannah doesn’t live here anymore and so she didn’t think about it, but I know she was relieved that we were able to get it sorted.”

Hannah and Richard, who have been together for 10 years, and are taking a trip to Barcelona for their honeymoon.

The couple decided earlier this year that they wanted to get married and hold a party at Hannah’s family’s home before it is sold.

Victoria, a children's nurse, added: “It was a really, really good day. The weather was beautiful when it needed to be, and the storms didn’t hit until later on. Hannah and Richard just decided a couple of months ago that it would be nice to get married and have a big party at the house before we sell it, and it was a lovely idea.

“It was a really relaxed, personal sort of wedding with the people who are closest to them.”

Cllr Nick Peel said: "I'm really pleased that we were able to assist in some way in making the day as special as possible for the happy couple.

"I pay tribute to our staff. Nobody likes roadworks, they are one of those necessary evils, and our staff don't always get praise on things like this so it's really nice for people to come forward with praise."
