A SINK hole has opened up in a Walkden road.

The hole, about 16ft deep, appeared in the B532 Newearth Road towards Walkden, between Queensway and Shawbrook Avenue on Thursday.

A spokesman for Salford City Council said: "Engineers from Urban Vision spotted a depression in the road as part of routine inspections. They closed the road to investigate before it could collapse.

"On opening up the road they found that subsoil had been washed away.

"There is a culvert which is five metres (16ft) beneath the road and engineers may need to open a hole up to 20m long (65ft) and four metres wide (13ft) to fully investigate the cause and extent of the sub-soil collapse.

"Engineers are on site now and traffic is moving freely and being managed by temporary traffic lights. Any future work on the road will be planned to cause as little disruption as possible to road users."

It comes days after a huge hole appeared in one of Manchester city centre's busiest roads after heavy rainfall.

The Mancunian Way was closed last month while contractors worked to repair the 40ft deep, 15ft wide crevice.
