THE Governess and The Vixen made it a one-two when they took part in The Brain of Bolton competition this week.

The pair, otherwise known as Anne Hegerty and Jenny Ryan, are well known faces to viewers of the popular ITV quiz show The Chase.

But it was in the more humble surrounds of Astley Bridge Conservative Club that they showed off their amazing general knowledge prowess on Monday night.

The Brain of Bolton is the highlight of The Bolton Premier Quiz League's season, when the top 30 scorers from the regular league competition are asked a series of tough general knowledge questions in a bid to be crowned the town's cleverest.

And it was "The Governess" Anne who lifted the trophy for a record third time.

But she was pushed all the way by her fellow Chaser Jenny Ryan, who recently made her debut on the TV show and was nicknamed The Vixen by host Bradley Walsh.

Anne and Jenny both play in the quiz league on Monday nights for The Albert pub in Horwich.

Jenny, who was brought up in the town, and Anne, who lives in Manchester, were joined in the final four of the competition by another well known quiz champion Derek Heyes, who plays for The Crown in Horwich, and Steve Hepworth, of The Top Bull in Bolton.

They were asked a series of tough questions ranging from the name of Yuri Garagin's spacecraft to the capital of Kosovo before Anne emerged triumphant, with Jenny finishing second and Derek third.

Afterwards, Bolton Premier Quiz League chairman Pete Greenwood said the event had been a great success.

He added: "Having two experts from one of TV's most popular quiz shows playing in our league shows what a high standard we are at, but at the same time it is great fun and everyone had an enjoyable evening."

The next season starts at the end of October and if any teams are interested in joining they can email Pete at peter.greenwood4@ntlworld.com.
