THESE are the latest images of the new Aldi store planned for the Mecca Bingo site in Breightmet.

Councillors will be asked to rubber stamp the plans for the store and five retail units at a meeting tomorrow.

The planning committee will run the rule over the application from German food giants Aldi who believe the multi-million pound investment could create 100 jobs for local people and “reinvigorate” the Breightmet area.

Permission has already been granted to demolish the bingo hall — despite attempts from Mecca to block the move.

In August, staff held an emotional farewell weekend for loyal customers before the business closed its doors for good.

Mecca had attempted to negotiate with landlord’s Millfield Estates but the Aldi proposal was considered a more “viable” alternative.

Staff were outraged back in February as letters were delivered to 3,000 Breightmet homes announcing the plans — before Mecca employees had been informed about the potential closure of the bingo hall.

If, as expected, the plans are approved, work to bulldoze the bingo hall could begin in November.

Work would then begin on the shopping complex — which also includes space for 213 cars. The Aldi building itself will take up the eastern part of the site and will be a single storey building covering 1,715 sq m.

It will open from 8am until 10pm from Monday to Saturday and between 9am and 5pm on Sundays.

The five separate retail units are described as having a “flexible use” — with no users currently in place.

There are also plans to create two pedestrian footpaths from Bury Road to the south of the development.

A spokesman for the developer said: “The significant investment proposed by Aldi would provide the opportunity to radically improve the visual appearance of this prominent, District Centre site, whilst also creating local jobs and enhancing consumer choice within Breightmet’s retail sector.

“The introduction of the development will increase the potential for linked-trips which is likely to increase footfall to the benefit of local businesses — the regeneration of this important site will reinvigorate Breightmet more widely.”
