A BREIGHTMET couple’s wedding celebrations are boldly going where no one has gone before.

Kim Henderson and Gordon Florence, from Newby, share a love — not just for each other — but for all things Star Trek too.

So as they prepare to say their vows tomorrow, the Trekkies are setting their phasers to fun with a sci-fi-themed wedding.

The couple are donning outfits modelled on the ceremonial white uniforms worn by the likes of British actor Patrick Stewart — known to Trekkies everywhere as Captain Jean Luc Picard — in the Star Trek movie Insurrection Nemesis.

They will be joined on the day by more than 60 guests and their six month old daughter Jadzia — named after Star Trek Deep Space Nine science officer Jadzia Dax — who will be wearing matching ceremonial whites.

Kim, aged 28, explained: “It’s a bit of fun and we can use the outfits again when we go to conventions.

“Why pay thousands of pounds for an outfit you can only wear once? This way we can have fun and save some money.

“It’s pretty much going to be kept a traditional ceremony, but with Star Trek bits too, including music for the ceremony, walking down the aisle, signing the register, and when we are leaving.

“Our guests will also be dressing up, and we know not all of them are Star Trek fans, so we’ve said they can come as sci-fi and comic book characters of their choice.”

As Kim, who works at Burnden Park Asda, walks down the aisle at Mere Hall, she will carry a regulation phaser rifle along with her bouquet.

A wedding car, decorated with troublesome tribbles, will then beam them off to a wedding reception at the Brooklyn Hotel.

The couple are also members of Manchester Starfleet and the fan group will join the ceremony on Saturday.

Sadly they are down a Klingon for the day, with the journey from Newcastle proving too much of a trek for him.

Gordon, aged 43 and a stay-at-home dad, said: “Thanks to Manchester Starfleet we do have some admirals coming.

“We are really looking forward to it; it’s going to be fun!”

The couple met at a comic con in Manchester two years ago when Gordon was dressed as Doctor Who’s infamous villain The Master and Kim as Star Wars Princess Leia.

“It was the split skirt and plaits that did it,” she joked.

Their love kicked off at warp speed thanks to their joint passion for sci-fi and Gordon proposed in March last year.

Having been passionate Star Trek items since they were both in their teens, they believe they have collected thousands of pounds worth of memorabilia over the years.

The home they share with their daughter is a shrine to the show, with only the bathroom and kitchen free from memorabilia.

Much of the memorabilia — including a detailed Starship Enterprise model and life-size cut-outs of the cast — will be used to decorate their reception venue to celebrate the start of their marriage.

Star Trek - a brief history

Star Trek first arrived on our screens in 1966 with William Shatner taking the helm as the first captain of the USS Enterprise, James T Kirk.

Created by Gene Roddenberry, the show and its stars became famous not only for their adventures across the universe, but also their catchphrases.

Among them were Leonard Nimoy as alien science officer Spock, with the iconic Vulcan hand-gesture and vow to "live long and prosper" and phrase "beam me up Scotty”.

It was cancelled after three seasons and 79 episodes, only to be later brought back as an animated series and a series of movies starring the old cast.

In 1987 the show and the starship returned to the small screen, this time under the watch of British actor Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean Luc Picard.

Star Trek: The Next Generation was responsible for introducing the famous warlike alien Klingons and the terrifying Borg.

Popular with audiences around the globe, it ran until 1994 and spawned a number of movies and TV spin-offs, including Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager - featuring the shows first female lead Captain Kathryn Janeway.

Star Trek: Enterprise, a prequel set before the time of the original series, marked the end of the run when it was cancelled in 2005.

But in 2009 the show came back with a bang when Hollywood rebooted the original series as box office hit Star Trek, and its sequel Into Darkness.

This time Chris Pine took to the helm as James T Kirk, with Zachary Quinto by his side as Mr Spock.
