YOUNG bookworms dressed as their favourite characters to celebrate the birthday of legendary author Roald Dahl.
Pupils at St Phillips Primary in Leigh looked a picture when they turned up in their special outfits.
The youngsters dressed up as characters including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s Umpa Lumpa’s, Matilda and her nemesis Miss Trunchbull, The BFG and The Witches.
Each year group chose a Roald Dahl book to study for the school's literature week and wrote poems and stories based on the author’s style of writing.
Alongside pupils, staff also dressed up in Dahlicious costumes for the author's birthday.
Acting headteacher Lisa Rigby, who dressed up as an enormous crocodile, said the children had a fantastic time.
She said: “The kids all loved it and it was a fabulous day. We haven’t done a Roald Dahl day before but we will definitely be doing it again. It was great fun.”
Roald Dahl, also a poet, screenwriter, and fighter pilot, was born in Wales on September 13, 1916. His books for children include James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The Witches, Fantastic Mr Fox, The BFG, George's Marvellous Medicine, and The Twits.
