A NIGHTMARE month of major traffic disruptions is set to continue today as one of Bolton's busiest roads is closed overnight.

Bolton Council will close St Peter's Way — from Topp Way to the Kearsley Spur — from 8pm until 6am every night until the end of the month.

The closure, which begins tonight, is to allow the council highways to carry out preparatory work ahead of a £7.3 million resurfacing project next year.

It is expected to cause a high level of disruption to motorist who have already enduring the delays of 'STOP-TOBER'.

A fresh wave of lane closures and 40mph speed zones on St Peter's Way were rolled out on Saturday and will clash with tonight's series of closures.

The restrictions, which started on Saturday, will be in place to support the work on the Farnworth Tunnel by Network Rail.

The major tunnel project has been delayed due to complications and will run until December.

As part of the work, Network Rail are running a huge boring machine in the tunnel under the A666 to prepare it for electrified lines.

On Saturday's lane closure on the southbound carriageway, from the Manchester Road junction to Kearsley Spur, was expected to last two to three days with 40 mile per hour limits on all lanes.

The same route will then be closed on both carriageways on the outside lanes, with 40 mile per hour limits, for a further three to four days.

Delays will continue for another two to three days when the inside lane of the northbound carriageway is closed, with 40 mile per hour limits.

The programme of work comes on top of a heavily reduced rail timetable but Network Rail said its "belt and braces approach" would ensure the project to enlarge Farnworth tunnel would continue "smoothly and safely".

The clash with the council's for-week resurfacing work has frustrated town hall bosses.

Speaking last week, following Network Rail's closure announcement, Cllr David Chadwick said the work would have a serious impact on travel into and out of Bolton and apologised for the inconvenience.
