PLANS have been submitted for more houses to be built in Westhoughton.

Developers want to create an estate of 27 houses on vacant land next to Wellington Sstreet and Church Street in the town.

The land has an existing permission for housing in place after proposals for 21 houses were passed back in 2013.

However, the approved layout did not take into account the position of an existing sewer and now new residential plans have been drawn up.

Westhoughton has been the subject of a number of housing applications in recent months.

At a meeting of Bolton Council’s planning committee last week, councillors threw out plans to build 300 homes on land at Lee Hall following a sustained campaign by residents and ward councillors.

A month before, a heated debate resulted in the committee giving Jones Homes permission build 106 houses on a Greenfield site at the former Roscoe’s Farm in the town.

The council have also rubber stamped a new scheme for the former Greyhound stadium site in Westhoughton, with the number of houses increased from 38 to 50.

If approved, the latest proposals— from Cuerden Developments Ltd — will see a mix of housing types built on the land including three and four bedrooms properties of different sizes as well as six 2 bed apartments.

A spokesman for the developer said: “Through re-design of the layout, additional dwelling have been introduced — making better use of the available space.

“The new dwellings are to be constructed in brickwork and all materials will reflect those used on other buildings in the locality.”

Westhoughton Councillor David Chadwick said like with the greyhound stadium plans, once permission is granted for an area, it sets a precedent.

He said: “It is not unusual for developers to be granted permission for a number of houses in an area and then come back with plans to increase that number.

“I will be looking more closely at these proposals in due course.”
