NEW safety measures have been unveiled in an attempt to improve a "danger junction" in Edgworth.

At a public meeting at The Barlow villagers were told that a range of traffic calming measures including installing a roundabout at the junction of Bury Road, Blackburn Road, Broadhead Road and Bolton Road in Edgworth were being considered as part of an effort to improve safety in the area.

The move follows a series of accidents at the busy junction in the past year which included the tragic death of 85-year-old Patricia Rudkin of Ramsbottom who was killed when the car she was a passenger in was involved in a crash along Broadhead Road.

In the latest smash, a Fiat 500 flipped onto its roof after colliding with a Volkswagen Passat, as shocked locals at the White Horse pub looked on.

One of the main proposals unveiled at the meeting was the possibility of installing a double roundabout at the junction although some have questioned whether there will be enough room.

Edgworth Parish councillor Alan Buchanan said he agreed that something needed to be done.

He said: "I don't think there's enough room for a roundabout but I can't make any official comment because whatever is going on I'm not party to the discussions. I've spoken to a few people about it and there's a general consensus in the village that the junction is a bit of a nightmare. It is a problem, there's been three incidents and one fatality in the last 12 months so it's definitely a problem and something that needs something doing about it."

Along with the proposed calming measures others have called for a reduction in the speed limit to 20mph.

North Turton councillor Colin Rigby said a meeting had taken place with officers with a goal of finding the best solution.

He added: "It's fair to say that in the previous five months traffic enforcement officers have made 13 visits up here. In the last six weeks they've been average more than a one visit a week.

"The traffic engineers view is that two roundabouts are the best option because you have to give way so that will slow the traffic down. They've also suggested altering the signage at the approach to make it more clear that there's a junction there and to alter the kerbs."

The plans are now expected to be reviewed before any new measures are put in place.
