FAST food giant McDonald's has apologised after a woman said there was mould in her breakfast sandwich.

Gaynor Jarvis complained to managers after spotting green mould on the bacon and sausage sandwich she was eating at the burger chain's Astley Bridge restaurant in Waters Meeting Road.

She also claims that part of the sandwich had already been eaten before she could take a bite of it herself.

McDonalds has since apologised and launched an investigation.

Ms Jervis claims she was only offered a replacement sandwich at the restaurant, but McDonald's said it offered a full refund when she raised concerns.

Ms Jervis also alleges that store managers said it was not mould, and that it had been rubbed off from the product's blue wrapper.

McDonalds said it takes food safety and quality seriously and that rigorous tests are in place to keep standards high.

MS Jervis said: "Usually I would not have a McDonald's breakfast, but this was convenience for a change due to lack of sleep from a poorly child.

She added: "I have since called the manager of the Bolton store. She informed me that this green mould on the bun is actually blue and most probably from the blue wrapper that it was stored in and it has been sent off to the lab.

"I was told if I went back to McDonald's she would process a refund. Which would be my third trip to McDonald's and quite frankly the petrol money would have cost me more than the refund."

A spokesman for McDonald's said: “We apologise for Ms Jarvis’ experience when visiting our Astley Bridge restaurant. As soon as she raised her concern, the restaurant offered a full refund then began an investigation.

“Food safety and quality are our highest priority and our restaurants and our suppliers place great emphasis on quality control, following rigorous standards in order to avoid imperfections in our products.

“Our customer services team will endeavour to keep Ms Jarvis up to date following our investigation.”
