WE wonder if this scene will fox any of our Looking Back readers.

It certainly caused confusion for us here at The Bolton News' offices although photographer Steve Holt recognised the spot immediately.

It is, as we now know, Chorley New Road towards Overdale — the lay by where a flower seller is often seen at weekends.

In our original image, taken in 1950, the lay by was clearly used for its original purpose which was as a bus terminus.

The flower bed looks rather splendid and the area is very well kept indeed.

The cars you can see travelling up and down Chorley New Road are typical of the 1950s and there would be far fewer vehicles on the roads in those days of course.

The bus, on the left, is manned by a driver and conductor.

There will be many of our readers who recall the days when conductors would walk up and down the bus selling tickets from a machine.

The top floor of the bus would usually be filled with a cloud of smoke as cigarette and pipe smokers would be up there enjoying the view as the bus travelled along Chorley New Road.

Do you have memories of travelling on public transport in Bolton during the 1950s?

Perhaps you worked on the buses or have stories to tell of Chorley New Road and the Heaton area of town.

If so get in touch with Gayle McBain on 01204 537269 or email gayle.mcbain@nqnw.co.uk to share those memories.
