YOUNG rugby players are swapping studded boots for studded jackets as they prepare rock out to raise funds for their team.

Members of Bolton Rugby Club under 14s have joined together as rock band Risen and hope to raise the roof at their gig tonight.

Drummer Benjamin Williamson, aged 13, bassist Owen Critchlow, aged 13, guitarist Dylan Hill, aged 14, and singer Adam Critchlow, aged 16, will play a set of classic rock and pop songs at the club for the first time.

The lads, who all attend Bolton School aim to raise as much money as they can for their team kit and equipment.

Benjamin's mum Rainy, aged 46, who is helping to organise the event, said: "They all play rugby together for the under 14s club.

"One day earlier this year Ben couldn't go to training because he was playing a gig. His coach was really interested and asked whether he would like to play something at the club.

"He was delighted and got together with some other members of the rugby team.

"Ben has been practicing hard and he's really looking forward to playing, although he's a bit apprehensive playing in front of so many people he knows."

The band will play at the club, in Avenue Street. Rainy said: "Benjamin has been playing drums since he was six. He can also play the ukulele, bass and electric guitar. He used to have lessons at Booths Music in Churchgate.

"He's always loved music, particularly heavy rock from the 1970s such as Iron Maiden, Meatloaf and Judas Priest. But they've worked out a more audience friendly set for this gig so everyone can sing along, such as Bon Jovi and Oasis. It should be a really good night."

Risen play Bolton Rugby Club from 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for children, which includes a pastie and pea dinner.
