LUCKY art students at Bury College were given the chance to meet boxing star Amir Khan and gain some hands-on photography skills during a live boxing match.

Second year Interactive Media students Troy Harvey and Ella Klusiatis were set a live brief from Bury Amateur Boxing Club, who challenged them to take photographs of a tournament.

The Bolton-born two-time former world champion was the guest of honour at the tournament, held at Radcliffe Civic Suite, spectating and showing his support to the competitors.

The tournament saw Belfast take on Bury and included a total of 14 matches for the college students to capture the action from.

Troy, aged 17, from Ramsbottom, very much enjoyed the work experience brief.

The former Woodhey High pupil said: "This was a really new experience for me, as sports photography is something that I hadn’t tried before, but it worked out really well and I captured some really exciting images that I can use in my portfolio."

Former St Gabriel's RC High pupil Ella, also 17, added: "I was a bit nervous before hand because I’ve never photographed anything like this before, but I really enjoyed it, and the photographs will really add something different to my portfolio."

John Pritchard, Assistant Curriculum Manager for Visual Arts at Bury College also believes that the opportunity of gaining hands-on photography experience will make an impressive addition to student’s portfolios.

He said: "This has been such a fantastic opportunity for our Interactive Media students, the photographs that they have captured will make an invaluable addition to their portfolios as they start attending their University interviews, and we really look forward to working with the Boxing Club in the future. A big thank you to all concerned for the chance to attend and document the event."
