A BRAVE young woman celebrated being clear of cancer – by travelling the world.

Leanne Parker, aged 26, was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2008 and spent three years on gruelling chemotherapy treatment at The Christie in Manchester.

But not one to sit about and wallow, after going into remission she took the opportunity to travel the world with her boyfriend Junior Chae, aged 26, who has stuck by her throughout.

Miss Parker, from Breightmet, who continues to travel, said: "After three years of treatment, going into remission made me want to achieve as much as possible. I decided to go travelling and went to Peru, Thailand, Cambodia, Hong Kong and Australia."

She has now been given the all clear and to celebrate her milestone she is hosting a party where she hopes to raise money for the Christie.

Miss Parker has done a number of fundraisers for different cancer charities, including a sky dive for Clic Sargent, but hopes this will be the biggest and best yet.

Miss Parker, who works at a mental health support unit in Bury, said: "I was 18 when I was told I had leukaemia. I was at college at the time. All my friends went off to university but I couldn't because of my treatment.

"I only really had a sore throat – it felt like I had a lump in it. I went to my GP who sent me to Royal Bolton for tests. It turned out that there actually was a lump in my throat – and it was leukaemia.

"When they first told me I was completely shocked. I knew what it was but I didn't know much about it or whether it was treatable. Thankfully it was so I went to the Christie and was treated by Dr Bloor who was said it was curable."

Chemotherapy was tough but Miss Parker got through it thanks to the support from her mum Bernadette Bates and Mr Chae.

Miss Parker's five year all clear charity night' will take place at the Mosley Arms in Breightmet on Saturday, November 28. Tickets cost £20. To book, call 07734 441462.
